On Monday, Community Sprouts got an inside look into the farm to school workings of Clarke Middle School in Athens, GA! We were joined with Agriculture Education teacher Debbie Mitchell and Jen who teaches Home Economic classes to lead the tour which encompassed multiple grow beds, a full greenhouse, compost, goats and chickens! In just 4 years and solely through grant funding and teacher collaboration, this school has created such an extensive foundation for Farm to School learning and it was such a pleasure to explore their grow spaces - and get an idea or two...or many for our existing F2S curriculum. A virtual slide show of our tour can be found below and please do look more into the workings of Clarke Middle's Farm to School Programing, they are a wonderful example of what a small, grass roots community can accomplish within their school. Happy faces - Debbie (far left), Caitlyn, Michelle (center) and ____ in front of the material reuse sign - those are straws, pens, bottle caps and other materials rescued from the trash and put to create a beautiful sign.
